Korean ""Academia"
06.30.04 (8:53 am) [edit]
Saw this in the Herald today http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/...
Gave me a bit of a laugh, having worked in Korean "academia (LOL)" for four years. Some choice snippets:
During my doctoral course in England from 1992 to 1996, I witnessed an extraordinary academic process that would have been virtually unthinkable from a Korean professor's point of view. A diligent, hard-working postgraduate student from Greece, who had studied toward a Ph.D. degree for seven years, had arranged to have the oral examination for his thesis from his internal and external examiners. Unfortunately, the oral examiners decided that he could not be awarded the degree, due to the lack of a clear rationale for the approach adopted in the thesis and the subsequent need for major revision.
Talk about cultural differences. So the guy's thesis was not good, well, that happens every day in the real world. Do not produce the goods, do not get the reward. I find it so typically Korean research is considered secondary to ass-kissing and envelop passing. It does not matter if that system leads to department stores collapsing or bridges falling down, hell this connection cannot even be made.
Even if a number of his assertions or approaches needed modifying, the examiners' decision still seemed excessively harsh and even irresponsible.
I will tell you what is irresponsible: letting the guy pass and then having tunnel he designed cave in and kill a couple of hundred people, for example.
During my study in the U.K., I was frequently reminded that I had to conduct quality research, and prepare painstakingly for the oral examination. I recall that I was always aware of the undesirable consequences of failing to do this. I maintained the same attitude throughout the period of my study and my self-motivation greatly benefited my research abilities.
Something every Korean needs to check in a dictionary: accountability and consequences for actions.
Since my return to Korea, I have been involved in various academic processes, including the examination of both master's and doctoral theses. To my knowledge, there has never been a single case in Korea where a Ph.D. candidate has failed to obtain his or her degree. Speaking as a Korean professor, however, I acknowledge that not all theses submitted are necessarily outstanding.
Ass-kiss, go through the motions, pass the envelopes and pass. Then stay in Mommie's spare bedroom because nobody will hire yet another worthless Korea degree-mill Phd incapable of doing anything but ass-kissing and collecting envelopes.
"How can you dare to fail a candidate?" This deep-rooted custom is derived from a combination of sentiment and manners and has tarnished university competitiveness as well as producing incompetent scholars and scientists
That is right, NOBODY fails unless you miss half the classes. If you fill the chair, you pass.
Korean universities need to adhere to a moral or ethical code.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA HA!
At the last degree-mill I worked at, all that was required of us was the kiss EVERYBODY'S ass ALL the time, everybody Korean that is. Nobody gave a flyin' fuck if you taught anything to anybody, so long a you did not cancel too many classes (up to a third and nobody would notice) and nobody complained.
The writer is an assistant professor of Pukyong National University's division of electronics, computers and telecommunications. - Ed.
After writing this, I'd wager this guy will be looking for work soon.

Loved this bit in today's Lies. http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
Uri Party Calls on US to Cover More of Base Relocation Costs
Seems the Han level is at boiling point. The stupidity level is, too because this ain't gonna happen.
By Oh Young-jin The Lies' most prolific pro-Roh fan ald Dear Leader flunky.
A chief policy maker of the ruling Uri Party on Monday suggested using the government plan to send troops to Iraq as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the United States.
Ummm, isn't this kind of opposite of how the real situation is? The USA is tying its troop withdrawals in Korea with Korea's willingness to honour its "alliance" with the USA, which since 2000, has been zero.
He said that the U.S. can show its appreciation by either taking up a larger portion of the moving costs or delaying its troop withdrawal.
This is so laughable I won't even comment on it, what a retard!
Referring to the U.S. plan to pull out part of its troops by 2005, two years sooner than the Seoul government wants, he said, ``We can press the U.S. to take a closer look at our request.’’
We hate America and want them to get out of Seoul but we do not want to see any troop reductions nor pay for any of the relocation costs associated with our Treaty with America and we are really mad now and if Uncle Sam does not do what we tell him we'll have more protests and "vigils" telling him how much we hate him and how superior we are because we have 5000 years of culure and they are just stupid round-eyes who kill our people and rape our women and he HAD BETTER DO WHAT WE TELL HIM AND STAY IN KOREA LIKE WE DEMAND!
(Massive head scratch on this one....)
I cannot believe how ameturish and utterly laughable the Dear Leader Party is. It was only last Friday when America crytically announced that the only forces it wants to keep in Korea is the airpower at Osan and Kunsan. Nor can I comprehend how politically inept the Dear Leader Party is or how massively stupid Comrade Roh is for letting this kind of thing into the press.
In two years that is all of USFK that will remain in Korea.

06.27.04 (9:31 am) [edit]
This site is also blocked by the Korean government. What for? I do not, have not, nor have never had any intention of linking to the video. Further, anyone who really wants to see it, can.
The real reason is that the Korean government does not want to hear, see or read any uncensored critical thought regarding Korean and the powers that run it, especically from foreigners. This is clealy a double standard since the Korean media feels free to comment of anything outside Korea it wishes, in particular the policies of the Bush administration.
The Korean media is heavily censored and controlled by the goverment.Take for example the 2002 Race Riots; when they suited the government, they contnued. However, persons such as myself used the freedom of expression the internet allows to show a view that was not particularly favourable to Korea and more importantly the government.
This event is simply being used stop critical thought regarding Korea that cannot be controlled by the goverment. However, since it is acceptable for the Korean media to be critical of foriegners, the issue is simple, base racism.
This is quite ironic, really. The Korean government should have enough intelligence the realise that the blocking the thoughts of foreigners writing in regards to Korea will only spur us on to point out this obvious double standard. For a nation so obsessed with its image abroad, Korea comes out with a big, black eye.
I predict the next target will be the Chosun Ilbo. Once Comrade Roh steps down the slippery slope of censorship it will be very difficult to resist trying to stop all critical thought regarding himself and his goverment. I have little doubt this order came from the Dear Leader and even less doubt that Comrade Roh's supporters in the Dear Leader party will whole heartedly support the elimination of free speech in South Korea. I can hear the chorus of howls about how "This is none of the dirty waygook's business, anyway."
It really does seem that "reform" in Korea is censorship and fascism. Kind of ironic, isn't it. Claim to hate the dictators and turn around and do the same thing, Comrade Roh.

Shame on you, Korea!
06.25.04 (11:21 am) [edit]
I wonder what Korea is trying to prove by censoring sites such as mine. The fact is, anyone who knows anything about how to use a computer can get the Kim Song-il video. I have seen it and I had no intention of posting it on my site. It would also be safe to assume that any Korean "netizen" who wanted to see it already has.
It is incredible the lengths Korea and Koreans go to further damage their already awful international reputation. Don't like what the dirty waygooks say on their blogs? CENSOR THEM! Of course, the blogs were a direct outgrowth of the heavily biased and racist Korean media. The foreign community in Korea got sick of the endless bilge pouring out of the Korean media demonising round-eye. Further, the messages sent to Koreans by bloggers such as myself could be used as a tool to improve Korean society (which is not possible in such an inward looking and self absorbed society).
Koreans also do not remember (or choose not to) that about 99% of the technology used in Korea came from the dirty waygooks. These devils come to Korea to rape their women and drink their wine but they also provide the means to make things in Korea. I have some new for you, Korea and MIC:
Your country has the same kind of reputation as a pile of shit. Nobody actually likes it there. Sure, they put up with it for the easy money and hot chicks but that is the only reason. Since the 2002 Race Riots, the dirty round eyes have leaving Korea by the planeload, never to return. With them they take their money and expertise. That Korea's economy is in the toilet is directly related to this.
Take a look at Dave's ESL Cafe Korean jobs posts. There is a record number today, 409. Korea and Koreans have screwed and ripped off so many dirty waygooks they can get the evil round eyes to go to the Land of the Racist Scum. Funny, that?

Kidnappings, Handovers and a Monumental Pile of Shit
06.22.04 (10:58 am) [edit]
am not going to get into a great amount of detail in regards to the latest events regarding kidnappings in Iraq but I am going to address this to the American public and the Bu$h administration:
DO WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN OR GET THE FUCK OUT!
It is pretty obvious now to anybody with even one functioning brain cell that Wolfie and the boys have completely botched the war in Iraq. They grand imperialistic design continues to spiral into an ever-growing pile of manure. Seems these people have absolutely no idea of how to pacify a country once you have conquered it. America has to play by these rules if it is to have any chance of achieving anything: http://www.tblog.com/template...
I am all in favour of a stable, self governing Iraq with some sort of attention to human rights. That is pretty basic stuff. However, America is not capable of restoring order with the number of troops it has on the ground. Moreover, the US troops are not trained for this kind of duty. How incredibly moronic was it for Wolfie and the boys to immediately dissolve the Iraqi armed and intelligence forces? What is happening now is a direct result of that blunder. It is also very wrong to assume that Iraq is ready to accept American style democracy.
I wonder how many more dead people, American, Iraqi and others, it will take before Bu$h autobots concede that the course of the war is at very best a stalemate and that every American killed leads to the opposition getting stronger? The "handover" will achieve nothing. What is more, America has created the problem it said it wanted to solve; there were no links to terrorism in Iraq. Instead it turned the Iraqi people against it. Iraqis, who were allowed to keep their weapons on Wofie's edict, are now the "terrorists." Unfucking believable, isn't it?
Pride is a dangerous thing and something Americans can be too full of. The fact is America went to war to get control of Iraq's oil and thus control world oil prices. They have the same deal with the Saudis, "We protect you and you keep the oil flowing." You do not have to be Einstein to figure these things out. Added to this mix is Americans and especially Bu$ites are so trapped in their dogmatic ideology that they cannot see the forest through the trees. I wonder if any Bu$hite has ever asked this question to himself:
"Why does everybody hate us? Could it be something that we have done?"
Bu$h and Wolfie are really in the shit-hotel now. If they admit, like the military which never wanted to get into this mess, that the conduct of the war has been completely SNAFU, their religious fanatic base seeking Armageddon (the Iraqi resistance calling them "Crusaders" is no coincidence) will turn against them. If admit that they do not have the troop levels to restore order and get the UN in, Cheney and Bechtel will be lost because they will have to share the loot.
There is really only one solution. The USA has to swallow its pride and allow the UN in. The USA simply does not have to force levels, expertise or training to restore order. The most obvious example of how a nation in anarchy can be stabilised is the former Yugoslavia. This kind of commitment will take years. It will require the USA cooperate with many, many different nations to form a true coalition.
One nation making all the decisions is not a coalition.

The plight of North Korean refugees is again in the news. Here is the Lies link: http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
We all know the story but I wonder how Comrade Roh feels at the Dear Leader's orders not to protest the repatriation of NK refugees.
Comrade Roh, you are sentencing the returnees to death and dooming their families to the gulag, all because they want a better life without squalor, hunger, fear and repression. Who caused that situation? It was not the USA, it was the Dear Leader, who lives in splendour while his people starve.
This situation reminds me of how German Chancellor Willi Brandt dealth with the East. While Brandt attempted to engage the East, he never wavered on the issue of human rights, which are the universal values that underpin any society. Without respect for basic human rights, the foundations of any society will eventually crumble. That is what happened to the Soviet Union, is happenning to North Korea and will certainly happen in South Korea.

Saw this article in the Chosun http://english.chosun.com/w21... and a similar one in the Lies.
I wonder of these people who are losing their jobs participated in the 2002 Race Riots or did anything counter the barrage of racist propaganda that swept South Korea in their wake?
The answer is "no."
Uncle Sam owes you nothing. If you want compensation, have a go at Comrade Roh or the Dear Leader.
Even better, ask PSPD, which organised the Race Riots.

"We are in danger of shattering this alliance by our own policies. This is the United States jeopardizing political support for alliance in a democratic country," Sigal told The Korea Herald.
More Korean "journalism." Go out and find somebody who supports your view, even if the so called "organisation" has no credibility or record. I have never heard of this one before.
Sigal pointed to a series of U.S. policies toward the North that "do not make sense" as the key threat to the alliance and said there has been a long standing difference between the Bush administration and the government of South Korea.
I do not agree much with the Bush administration but in this case, there is absolutely no sense to dealing with the Dear Leader. He has zero intention of honouring any "agreement" that he might ink in the first place. Sounds like our "thinktank" expert needs to learn something about Korea and Koreans.
Sigal pointed to a series of U.S. policies toward the North that "do not make sense" as the key threat to the alliance and said there has been a long standing difference between the Bush administration and the government of South Korea
Really? It makes sense to prop up a dictator, pay him off every decade with the fore knowledge he as not one intention of honouring his agreement?
"There is a profound change underway on the Korean Peninsula and it is irreversible. "
The Norks are actively, agressively and successfully driving a wedge between the USA and South Korea. They are Korean and understand Korean "kibun" and "han." With memories of the Korean war fading, the Norks can manipilate Southern opinion successfully.
The plan is proceeding well, swiftly and successfully.
This from the Chosun is rather interesting: http://english.chosun.com/w21...

Are Comrade Roh and the Keystone Commies on Drugs?

Well, if they are not, they sure need a reality drug. Saw this in the Lies today:http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
Roh Backer to Seek US Concessions Give what has happened in the last week, you people are seriously fucking deluded, man!
Yoon’s announcement means that Lee, progressive scholar on North Korea, will be promoted to take charge of the NSC secretariat.
Wonderland, and I am not talking hagwans here. Through the Korea looking class. Comrade Roh must be seriously mentally unstable or stoned if he thinks for ONE SECOND the Americans will deal with a North Korean agent.
According to experts, the new position will strengthen Lee’s hand in the formulation of policies on impending national security issues. These include the country’s plan to dispatch troops to Iraq, the ongoing effort to realign the decades-old alliance with the United States, and the international effort to resolve the issue of the North’s nuclear programs.
How many tokes did it take to come to this brilliant conclusion? America is in no mood to deal with any Korean and certainly not an obvious Dear Leader plant. I really can't fathom how deluded Koreans can be.
``The NSC has been expanded under the Roh administration and Lee’s promotion will improve its ability to coordinate among the ministries of foreign affairs and trade, national defense and unification,’’ an expert said on condition of anonymity.
Note italics.
However, Lee’s promotion is set to intensify discord with the United States, as he is seeking to achieve equality in the two countries’ alliance. Roh has also promoted efforts to convert the alliance into a partnership, a pledge that Lee helped formulate during Roh’s presidential campaign in 2002.
Really, timing is everything, ain't it? Don't bogart that joint, man!
Lee’s promotion should be regarded as the continuation and strengthening of Roh’s new approach, experts said.
One that has, and continues, to put Korea's economy in the toilet, at a time when in North America, things are recovering quite nicely, thanks.
``Lee has long worked as Roh’s top security advisor, having eliminated his potential rivals,’’ one said. Foreign Minister Yoon Young-kwan was sacked for allegedly having frequent run-ins with Lee, according to Chong Wa Dae officials. Yoon was replaced by Ban Ki-moon, a career diplomat who worked with Lee at Chong Wa Dae.
I love this, court intreague is seriously fucking Korea up. Yoon realised that Korea had to play a part in the wider world. Comrade Roh is closing the doors. Slamming, actually.
In relations with Washington, Seoul is likely to strengthen its say, becoming more unwilling to accept U.S. demands. Lee’s views on U.S.-related issues are well summed up by his remarks that the alliance has passed the stage in which one side can beg for concessions from the other.
Unfucking believable! No comment necessary!
On Other, Related Topics....
The Defence Ministry said yesterday it will propose 7.3 trillion won ($6.29 billion) for military modernization next year, a 16-percent increase from this year’s spending.
Other force improvement projects will include the introduction of F-15K fighter jets, KF-16 jets, K1A1 tanks, Aegis-equipped destroyers and C4I, or joint Command, Control, Communication, Computer and Intelligence system, it said.
Glad to see Comrade Roh is punishing America by spending billions on US hardware. Is the irony lost?
The Bank of Korea (BOK) on Friday reported its business survey index (BSI) outlook for manufacturers dropped to 82 in June from 96 in May, the lowest in 10 months since it recorded 72 last August. The outlook for non-manufacturers also dropped to 74 from last month’s 89.
An index of 100 is regarded as the boom-or-bust line, with a reading above 100 meaning that optimists outnumber pessimists in their business conditions or outlook, and a reading below 100 meaning the opposite I really pity the poor working stiffs Comrade Roh is fucking over with his delusional policies. Then again, Comrade Roh says the economy is not in crisis. He lives in a palace so everybody must, too.

Repost...
06.10.04 (10:38 pm) [edit]
I initially posted this as one of my first weblogs regarding Korea. I will pat myself on the back as having been 100% accurate. It was posted in January 16, 2004.
While we are on the subject of Korea's new diplomacy, let's have a little recap on how successful it has been.
Fall 2002. Mob left over from soccer even decides it is fun to be a mob and assert it's racial superiority. Mob has lots of guidance and support for Dear Leader. Government reaction: None, racist mob useful for election.
Dec 19, 2002. Comrade Roh elected. Promises "I will not kow-tow to Washington, I will not go to Washington to just take pictures, I will show Washington who is boss, I will make the US-Korea relationship equal!" Mob goes wild. America does, too but does it behind closed doors.
January 2003 Mob no longer useful so government tries to send it home. Comrade Roh visits USFK and writes "We are friends" in guestbook. Thirty-seven thousand Americans proceed to toss their cookies and write e-mail to every congressman, senator, mom, dad, dog or cat that will read it.
Jan 2003. The problem with using a mob to get elected is that they won't go home when you tell them. Huge anti-white person demonstrations continue. US ambassador announces "We'll withdraw our troops any time Korea wants it."
Mid-Jaunuary 2003. DAMAGE CONTROL! Comrade Roh and practically everyone else in Korea claims racist mob's demands were "all a misunderstanding." America pissed, big mad. New diplomacy goes into damage control.
Feb 2003. "60 Minutes" does an entire show on what is going on in Korea and how the Americans who defend the place are treated, well, like shit. American public enraged. Korea on HUGE damage control. Yoon and the Keystone Commies go to Washington and look like idiots trying to be the big boys in Washington. Yea, right!
March 2003. Several Big Wigs visit Korea, including Daddi Bush, the real power in America. Wolfowitz and Rumsfelt also visit. Koreans working on "New Diplomacy."
April 2003. USFK announces withdrawal of all US soldiers form north of the Han river to south of there of. New Diplomacy on massive damage control. How dare they? PM Goh Kun sent to bases to say how much Korea loves America, which is not in the least impressed. Recent mob activity conveniently forgotten. US reaction? We's packin' our bags.
May 2003. US announces it is leaving Panmunjom and handing over all responsibilty to Korea, in regards to its desire for a "more equal relationship." Also will hand over all fireplans to Koreans, meaning US guns are not included anymore. Koreans go wild, Americans respond "This is the equality you wanted." All demands for new SOFA, etc, on indefinate hold.
Summer 2003. Tons of negotiations going on, in guess where, Hawaii. America MEGA PISSED at Korea and simply states what is going to happen. Koreans are incensed but cannot say anything because Uncle Sam is more than willing to plug. This is not how this "New Diplomacy" thing was supposed to work. America was supposed to respect Korea superior history and culture and unconditionally obey it's senior's demands.
Fall 2003. Korea given one out: significant troop allotment to Iraq. As usual, Comrade Roh cannot make a decision. Plays troop issue with an America promise to keep some troops in Seoul to act as a "tripwire." US agrees to consider it.
Winter 2003. Korea wants troops in Seoul but refuses to grant valuable land for it. Troop issue totally FUBAR.
Jan 2004. Here is where everything goes to shit. Foreign ministy sees how all the good realtions with America built up over many years are being shot to shit by Comrade Roh and the Keystone Commies (NSA) and correctly see how Korea is being increasingly ignored by America.
Jan 15, 2004. Comrade Roh reacts to this by firing Foreign Minister for not following "Independent policy." Outgoing foreign minister, in parting shot, states that new policy only causes Korea to become more isolated, is causing economic harm and has led to unilateral US action regarding Korea.
Jan 16 2004. US announces that there will be no troops in Seoul whatsoever, case closed.
I could go on with more detail but the blunderings of Comrade Roh and the Keystone Commies would be comical if it were not hurting the economic and security well-being of the Korea people.
It will be very interesting to see what happens for the rest of 2004. I predict no end to the "Nuclear Stand-off," which is not a stand-off anyway, and a more rapid withdrawal of USFK than anyone imagined. Korea's economy will continue to stagnate while the rest of the world will pick up. Youth unemployment after hiring season will be even higher and Comrade Roh will try to create even more government jobs for them, after promising to create 80,000 (astounding, isn't it?) government jobs this week! Talk about populism and how to ruin your economy.
Comrade Roh, happy lunar new year!

Little Girls in a Panty Raid...From the Dong-A
06.10.04 (9:21 am) [edit]
I am really enjoying watching the Korean media run around like squealing little girls in a panty raid:http://english.donga.com/srv/...
Most of all, the way the U.S. led the talks is more than unusual. At the FOTA, it demanded more land in Osan and Pyongtaek, where it will move the USFK base in Seoul. It does not make little sense when the U.S. said it would cut the U.S. military personnel in Korea by one-third while it demanded more land for its new base site. And this was why the FOTA broke down. It paled the title of the talk, the future of the alliance policy initiative.
As if this is something new. It all stared in February 2003 in the first round of talks. Hell, even the 12,500 troop reduction was announced at the time. The Koreans kept it quiet and went into turtle mode and hoped it would all blow over. It hasn't and won't. As I told every Korean who would listen at the time (and that was not many) America was packing up and if Korea did not want that to happen, it had better not tolerate Race Riots and even worse, using America as a scapegoat and a patsy anymore. However, old habits die hard.
The way the U.S. broke the news of its troop cuts in Korea with us did not fit in with the 50-year history of the two countries’ alliance.
ABSOLUTE HORSE-FUCKING-SHIT! The USA announced troop reductions long ago and the Korean side, in typical Korean style, choose to ignore anything that did not suit it. Besides, America was still Korea's whipping post at the time. Damage control could have be genuinely attempted at the time but Comrade Roh chose not to.
The USFK is the major axis in a deterrent against North Korea.
Oh, I see, they are your fraternal brothers only when it suits you. Since the USFK exists in the common interest of Korea and the U.S., the scale and timing of the cuts will affect the two countries’ relations. If the U.S. ignores the circumstances in which Korea is in, the two countries’ relations will slide from conflict into distrust.
Love this...a gruding admission that Korea needs USFK to guarantee security, both militarity and economically but completely ignores what the Korean governement and people did to lead their protector to fuck off.
As ye sow, Korea.

and the United States. The U.S., too, should clearly see that an emotional response like, "Unless this issue is resolved, there will be no augmentation of fighting strength," would not only hurt the pride of Koreans, but also entangle the situation.
I wonder that planet Koreans are on at the moment. Uncle Sam is mega-fucking-pissed at Korea and looking for an excuse to fuck off ASAP. It Korean "pride" that caused this mess and more is not going to guarantee Korean economic or national security.

I must admit I am shocked that Uber Racist Lee Kyung-hee has really changed her opinions now that jingosim does not fit the current times: http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/200 4/06/11/200406110012.asp" title="http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/200 4/06/11/200406110012.asp" target="_blank"http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/... Friction between the South Korean and U.S. governments is anything but new. As early as 1951, from the very beginning of negotiations on a cease-fire to end the Korean War, then President Syngman Rhee insisted upon fighting on alone rather than accepting a truce that would not provide unification under South Korean control. The National Assembly formally opposed the armistice and Rhee ordered the South Korean representative to withdraw from Panmunjom.
This is really refreshing and first time I have ever seen a Korean admit the truth: Rhee was happy to fight to the last American.
North Korea hardly seems to maintain its menacing military strength. A stray orphan from the Cold War era, it has rather turned a poor brother in need of sympathy.
More self delusion. One million troops with barge loads of WMD, couple with the desire to get more, still constitutes a threat to me. Emotion again gets in the way of reality. It does, however, show how effective the Dear Leader's propaganda campaign has been.
It is crucial that Americans recognize that not every South Korean is shouting "Yankee go home" and that not every young man here is anxious to burn the Stars and Stripes in the street.
This is also true but many, many are. What is more, Korean authorities either allow or tacitly encourage these activities when it suits them politically, while at the same time doling out either nothing or slaps on the wrist for illegal activities. This is not missed on Washington.
Instead of overreacting with shock and anger to the antagonistic attitudes of a certain group of South Koreans, therefore, leaders in Washington must try to look into the root causes to see what has undermined their cherished alliance.
I love it! Again insinuating that the "alliance" is only for the benefit of the USA. The fact that North Korea has been actively undermining the alliance is well known in Washington but the South cannot admit it because of its "pride."
This is great:
At the same time, South Korean leaders also need to exercise greater wisdom and prudence at this critical juncture for redefining the alliance. They must restrain from hastily advocating nationalism and independent defense when North Korea remains obscure about its nuclear ambitions, as well as its plan to open up and reform, which will be mandatory for building mutual confidence and a lasting peace on the peninsula
Translation. Well, we love to hate Big Nose and use racsim for political purposes and while we love the Dear Leader there is a little part of or collective Borg Brian that has a deep dark, fear of him. Therefore we had better ease up on Big Nose for a while because, eventhough he is only in Korea for his benefit to take our money and rape our women, we might need him, for now at least.
I wonder if Koreans are so naive that they think Americans do not read this kind of bile.

From today's Herald:
Anti-American sentiments are likely to dampen as most South Koreans are anxious to keep the remaining U.S. troops. Korean progressives, meanwhile, face the dilemma that pursuing an equal partnership with the United States would ultimately force South Korea to spend more money and personnel increasing its own defense capabilities.
No need for comment. I could not have said it better myself.
Also from the Herald:
"Korea has never witnessed such a massive monthly pullout of foreign funds since the market was opened to foreigners," said an official at the central bank. "But the outflow seems to be easing now.
Hmm. Could part A be related to part B? Me thinks they are.

My Letter to the Korea Lies
06.08.04 (9:24 am) [edit]
Of course, there is not a snowball's chance in hell that the Korea Lies will ever publish this letter, so I will put it up here for reactions: The Editor, The Korea Times,
Sir,
I read today with great amusement your paper's sense of shock at America's force withdrawals from Korea. Indeed there were four articles and one editorial devoted to the topic.
I find it rather odd that the Korea Times can be in any way shocked or surprised at these events. Do you, sir, forget what happened in 2002-2003 in Korea? Angry mobs chanted hate-America slogans in illegal demonstrations every day, tolerated by the government and encouraged by media such as the Korea Times. Koreans demanded the Status of Forces Agreement be scrapped and Korea be given sole right to prosecute US servicemen while at the same time the Korean military retains complete sovereignty over all its members while in Korea or abroad. The racism and jingoism of that time directly led to the lection of Roh Moo-hyun, who demanded "a more equal relationship with America." What happened was not "a misunderstanding." The intent was clearly heard in America and understood.
Korea is now paying the price for its excesses. Korea is getting its "more equal relationship with America." The most interesting thing I heard while I was living in Korea was "America will never leave Korea so we can treat them any way we want." I want to remind you of the untruth of this kind of thinking. Any time a "No GI's Allowed" sign goes up in Korea, that picture makes it to America via the internet instantly.
Do a little thinking, Korea. Do you think it is a coincidence that your economy is bad, you can't get US visas and USFK is leaving? It is not a coincidence, it is a direct result of the huge and unwarranted anti-US demonstrations of 2002-2003. Whether you like it or not, America is the largest economy in the world. For an export driven economy such as Korea, good relations with the USA are vital.
Do not think you can hide in your bubble, Korea Times. The US government know exactly what is happening in Korea. It knows the "NGOs" are run from Pyongyang and it is extremely sensitive to the way USFK members are treated in Korea. Do not assume Americans are stupid and unaware of what is happening in Korea. That was your mistake in 2003.

America's Way out of Korea
06.08.04 (8:44 am) [edit]
Events regarding the American pull-out of Korea are unfolding exactly as I predicted. This from today's Lies: http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200406/k t2004060816333011950.htm" title="http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200406/k t2004060816333011950.htm" target="_blank"http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
You can read the article yourself but I will repeat what will happen. There is no way the Pyongyang run "NGOs" will ever let USFK have one square metre of new land anywhere in Korea. It will simply never happen. Comrade Roh takes his orders from the NGOs and not granting land to Big Nose will be politically more important to him than Korean security concerns.
You see, Comrade Roh and his mob have convinced themselves for so long that USFK will never leave that they really believe it. This is a fatal mistake. The Americans will leave and want to leave as soon as they can.
Of course the Dear Leader and his minions in the South smell victory. With USFK gone South Korea as a state will not be too far behind. Unification under Juche is highly attractice to the mob that elected Roh.
Meanwhile, Koreans continue with their delusions that America is not serious: http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
I loved this part:
The government on Tuesday sought to play down the significance of the new U.S. proposal. ``It's not a unilateral notification of its plan but rather a formal suggestion for future negotiations,'' a Seoul official said on condition of anonymity.
Hardy-harrr-fucking-harr! I love how Koreans can delude themselves.
``But that does not mean that we will just accept the figure (of 12,500 troops). We think the figure is also negotiable,'' he told reporters.
Truly delusional. They are America's troops and they can do anything they want with them and given the way USFK members are treated in Korea they should have all been gone years ago.
Im expressed confidence that the U.S. will agree to extend the deadline for the USFK reduction.
Koreans have an innate ability for wish-craft, ie if you wish for something hard enough it will happen.
Seems that panic is setting in:http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
I absolutely loved this:
``Why has Korea become the first target of Washington’s move, ahead of Japan and Germany.’’
Unbelievable! Korean amnesia displayed at it finest! Angry mobs yelled "Yankee go home!" on the street for the best part of a year, kidnapped US soldiers and made them "confess," firebombed bases and attacked one soldier and killed him and wounded another. Just this weekend Koreans yet again proudly displayed racist "NO GI ALLOWED!" signs again. Un-fucking-believable!
Regardless of a whole or partial troop withdrawal, it is certain to more or less compromise our security until we build up our self-reliance defense posture against the North, as pledged by President Roh.
Don't you remember your own anti-US boosterism, Korea Lies? Now they consequence is happening. Duuuuuuuhhhhhhh.....
In this regard, it is regrettable that over 50 members of the ruling Uri Party have joined a signature-collecting drive in a bid to scrap the government’s decision to dispatch an additional 3,000 plus troops to an Iraq now ravaged by terrorism. They also plan to form a league with civic activists to realize the aim.
You know, you really do not have to be a brain surgeon to realise the Dear Leader runs both the Mobs and Uri-dang, which in turn run Comrade Roh. It is amazing how Koreans think that Americans and big-noses can be so stupid. Newsflash: We actually know what is happening in Korean politics.
This bit of incredible logic comes from the Herlad:
A rather new phenomenon is a sort of self-reproach that the surge of anti-Americanism in some sectors of Korean society is to blame for the U.S. moves to lower its military presence here. They often cite American officials' remarks that U.S. forces will remain only in places where they are welcome.
Priceless! Imagine how hard it must have been for Lee- Kyung-hee the uber-racist to publish this. I LOVE IT!
Also from the Herald:
In accordance with its GPR, in June 2003 Washington suggested its 33 percent troop reduction plan to Seoul along with the scheme to relocate its forces from near the DMZ to south of the Han River
Think the timing is a coincidence? I don't. America is giving you the "Equal Relationship" you wanted and a lot sooner than you expected, Comrade Roh. It is only a matter of timing now.

Korea's Economy in the Toilet...
06.07.04 (8:28 am) [edit]
Saw this in in the latest Korea Lies: http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
Now, I wonder if Comrade Roh and the Keystone Commies, along with the Red Guard, can make any connection between the 2002 Race Riots, the end of the "Alliance" with America and the economy?
No, that can't because that would mean two things, 1) making a deductive conclusion and 2) taking responsibility for your actions as a nation.
The numbers, for anyone familar with economics, are chillingly bad.
At the same time, more "reform, http://times.hankooki.com/lpa... of the kind that created the problem to begin with.
Korea is full of people with ten letters after their name but who are incapable of doing anything. Comrade Roh is a classic example. He managed to pass an exam and job a job which he is grossly inept at doing.
This is from the Lies' editorial:
President Roh Moo-hyun has repeatedly vowed to boost the economy as his topmost goal in the second phase of his administration. However, their promises have come to nothing, shattering the people’s expectations outright. Frankly speaking, the parties have only concentrated their efforts on winning the just-ended by-elections. There are still no signs that the economy will pick up. Instead, the economy is further threatened by three external factors, steep-rising oil prices, the imminent U.S. increase of interest rates and China’s belt-tightening policy.
Love this one. The root of the Korean economic malaise is Comrade Roh's left wing policies that foist labour agreements on businesses that kill their profitibility, coupled with Comrade Roh's xenophobic foreign policy, which is driving away both Korea's guarantor of security (USFK, see lead Lies article) and largest investor.
However, the Lies cannot take responsibility for Korea fucking itself up so badly. See the last sentence? Well, America and for once, China, are getting the blame, not Comrade Roh, the Korean Saviour from Waygooks. Perhaps I will make it clear, not that anyone Korea would ever listen to a whitey spell it out:
-America's economy has bottomed out (and the bottom was actually pretty soft this time) and naturally interest rates are going to go up. They cannot stay at almost zero for any length of time. If they do, your economy is really sick and needs major surgery. Japan comes to mind.
-Korea, in turning away from Big Nose and loving all things Chinese (including a one party state that murders its own citizens by the thousand, it seems) has found that it really is a small player in Chinese-US trade which is booming. China is growing too fast and now it is time to but the brakes on a bit. Comrade Roh has been focusing all his attention to fostering Chinese trade since he decided to punish Big Nose by not actively pursuing trade with him. Now Comrade Roh is in the predicament where Big Nose can easily buy Sony instead of Samsung, Toyota instead of Hyundai.
What a predicament for Comrade Roh. Elected by a Pyongyang sponsored mob to get rid of Big Nose while at the same to punish the rich in Korea. When capital flies away, ironically to China, Korea is left with an unemployed mob that swells every year.
And that is really dangerous, Mein Fuhrer.
I told you so, Korea.

Saw this in the Lies....
06.06.04 (10:49 am) [edit]
I saw this article in the latest Lies and thought it worthy of comment:
http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/200406/ kt2004060616355754190.htm" title="http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/200406/ kt2004060616355754190.htm" target="_blank"http://times.hankooki.com/lpa...
The author seems to be rather new to Korea and does not see the extent of the communist infiltration at Korean universites that is going on as I write this. Very sucessful it has been but he sums things up very well.
Despite all the talk of change in the U.S.-South Korea strategic alliance and the rhetoric of the leaders about how the relationship will evolve, for the youth there is almost no question. For them, the goal is to continue the struggle to get the Americans out of their country and to break the cycle of dependence.
Spot on, sir. I was stunned the first time I heard the "anything is better than the status quo" reasoning I heard from young Koreans. I first heard it in the early 1990s and these people are now entering positions of power. The sad part is that no thought whatsoever has gone into the process. I often said things like "well, first become wealthy under American protection and then go your own way." Such a statement I later learned was useless because the xenophobia of Koreans is so strong that any outside idea will be immediately discounted.
It's understandable that they're not interested in supporting the American crusade in Iraq, but it's not clear whether they understand the implications of U.S. troops leaving their soil or moving their country back toward its more traditional orbit around China.
I also found China worship rather odd, since China is hardly a paragon of human rights and democracy. It is also rather fond of meddling in its less powerful neighbour's affairs, something Korean student go into fits with in regards to America.
One thing is for sure, most of them cannot conceive of a danger from the North. They think the U.S. poses the greater threat and they have no comprehension of terms like the nuclear umbrella. Indeed many of them are proud to know that their brethren across the border have successfully developed nukes of their own.
Partially this is because there is so little official information about the North. The students know practically nothing about it. What they do know is the political theory coming from the North is very appealing in that it mixes traditional xenophobia with socialism and plays on jealousy of people better off than you are.
The sad part about this change is the inability of the leaders of either country to manage the relationship. Instead of being grateful to America for its valiancy during the Korean War and enabling the country's subsequent economic miracle (billions of dollars in aid and preferential trade arrangements), Koreans have a multitude of reasons to be hateful and the youth here see them all.
I have often heard that a Korea united under communism was prefferable to the present scenario.

Regan Passes
06.06.04 (10:29 am) [edit]
As all now know, Ronald Regan has passed at the ripe old age of 93. I will not get into the great argument over what he did or didn' t do for America. I will leave it to one comment:
Regan made America feel good about being American.
I am old enough to remember Regan getting elected and the strange view America had of itself in the late 1970s. The "can-do" feelings of America evapourated with the Vietnam debacle. Perhaps Carter, in giving amnesty to the draft dodgers, started the healing process but Regan certainly ended it.
Growing up during the worst of the Cold War was a weird feeling. As a child, I really did fear a nuclear exchange. I vividly remember doing the infamous "duck and cover" drills in the early 1970s. Even from a young age I never had any difficulty seeing that the USSR was indeed an evil empire as Regan later termed it.
Becoming politically aware in the mid 1970s was kind of a confusing experience. The Canada of ten years before was one of complete optimism and the belief that we could do anything we tried. However, the protectionism and socialist policies of the Trudeau government, as well as the world financial shocks that led to the failure of Bretton Wood made rather confused in what government was doing for us. It was pretty obvious that large budget defecits and more socialism (ie Wage and Price Controls of 1973) was not making things any better.
America got Regan and got to feel good about itself. We got more Trudeau, and then Lyin' Brian Mulrooney who preached restraint but ended up spending the farm. I had absolutely no faith in any government of Canada until 1993 when Jean Chretein for elected. For all his faults, at least he took a stand on something and got Canada working again.
Regan can certainly get credit for winning the Cold War and that is something that had to finally happen. I wonder if any other figure could have pulled such a feat off because the status quo benefitted all the various weapons dealers and spooks. The simple fact remained that America was introducing a new and high tech weapons model right when Regan was elected. America tech was still the best and remains so to this day. Much of that tech was a direct off shoot of the Space Programme. Regan happened to be in the right place at the right time in being able to implement the complete replacement of almost every weapons system in the US inventory and get to take the credit for it. He was also willing to to pay the price for it. In the end, he outspent the Russians and accelerated the end of an empire that was bound to collapse anyway.
I do not buy the claim "Regan changed government" in America. In fact, goverment has grown much more under Republicans than Democrats.
There is always a rush of claims of greatness when a President dies. I remember how people lined up to say how great a man Nixon was upon his death (and Nixon was the uber-scumbag) and that seemed pretty hollow. Regan does indeed deserve some adolation.

This had to be fisked....
06.02.04 (9:00 am) [edit]
Much like Kevin at IA, I have been taking a short respite from blogging about Korea. The main reason is that Korea is playing out like a bad movie; everybody knows the ending of the bad plot well in advance. However, this from the Korea Lies shows just how effective the Dear Leader's indoctrination at the universities has beeen:
Many Students Believe US Big Barrier to Unification
Translation. The rotten Yankees cannot have us reunited with our northern brothers because we will become the world superpower and they don't want competition.
By Yoo Dong-ho Staff Reporter Nearly half of Korean university students believe that the United States maintains the most hostile attitude toward the possible reunification of South and North Korea, an opinion poll showed on Wednesday.
Of course the Muderous thug that runs the place has nothing to do with Korea being separated when in reality Bu$h is that thug, not our revered Dear Leader.
According to the opinion poll conducted by the Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification, 49.1 percent of respondents said among four surrounding powers _ the U.S., China, Russia and Japan _ the U.S. is the biggest barrier to national reunification. Japan came in the second with 35.7 percent.
The Japan thing is also an old Dear Leader line. Koreans thing in the terms of a zero sum game, that there is a finate amount of world trade. The fact is a unified Korea would benefit Japan since Japan supplies all the high tech machinery Korea uses.
Asked which country is most favorable to the reunification of the long-divided peninsula, China topped with 38.3 percent. Japan ranked last place with 7.4 percent.
Ahhh, the China loving. What happened 15 years ago is never mentioned, nor the one party state thing that goes with it.
As for South Korea-U.S. relations, an overwhelming 87.1 percent complained about an unequal power relationship between the two traditional allies.
Well it is becoming a lot more equal now. The fact that America is about 100 bigger than Korea and has an economy about 25 times that of Korea might account for that.
However, more than seven out of 10 supported the continued presence of U.S. Forces Korea here.
Cake and eat it, too. Similar polls during the 2002 Race Riots showed about 70% wanting USFK to leave. Now, however, that such a thing seems plainly possible, the tune has changed. Chalk it up to "Han."
A total of 52.4 percent of respondents attributed Pyongyang’s nuclear arms ambitions to the reclusive communist country’s willingness to maintain its regime.
What a shockingly difficult conclusion to make.
Twenty-six percent said the nuclear weapons program is Pyongyang’s deterrent force against the U.S. threat to topple the Kim Jong-il regime.
We could never stand to see America meddle with the Dear Leader's Worker's Paradise. Although America has repeatedly said it will never invade North Korea we don't believe that.
Forty-eight percent replied the two Koreas should be reunified without fail,
This was something I always got a kick out of when I worked in Korean universities, that the kids took the prosperity and political freedom their parents had won for them with blood and sweat for granted.
As for Comrade Roh and the Keystone Commies, there is really no need to comment on them. I wonder how they will try to shut down my blog?
